Packing
So what does one pack for a ten-month journey? In Norway?? As a Minnesota native, I’m accustomed to layers, sweaters, and winter gear. Check. But packing all the things I need and use for ten months has been a daunting task, no lie.
After reviewing packing guides and suggestions, I was pleased to learn that secondhand stores are common in Norway, so if there is something that I need and I didn’t pack (e.g., snowpants), I can purchase it there. However, things are generally more expensive in Norway, so I’ve been planning to bring as many toiletries, medicines, etc. as I am able.
For the past four months, I have been gathering things to bring and making stacks of clothes for each season. Then, alongside the suitcases, reducing the volume of things to include only the very essential professional clothes, everyday clothes, and outdoor gear. Since I will be visiting different schools each day, I’m packing a basic set of mix-and-match clothes with the same color scheme. I like my shoes…but I’ve managed to reduce my collection to: Dress shoes (1 with heels, 1 without), casual shoes, flats, running shoes, winter boots, hiking boots, and rain boots.
At this point, 6 days before departure, I have 4 checked bags, 1 carry-on bag, and 1 backpack. My husband is flying over to Oslo with me, so I am using ‘his’ checked bags. Since he is not staying for the entire duration of the trip, but visiting frequently, I’ve also packed small suitcases for him to bring in the fall and another in the spring.
